The Company

A.E Coe and Sons Ltd has the longest continuously run portrait studio in the World, dating from 1855. The group of companies employs 50 people involved in the provision of a complete range of photographic services from Portrait and wedding photography to computer retouching.

The company has amongst its Directors a unique blend of photographic, business and franchise skills which compliment each other and provide a highly experienced base for franchisees to draw on.

The Directors photographic work has been recognised by being named 1992 Fuji Wedding Photographer of the year, 1993 and 1995 Agfa Portrait Photographer of the year and Craftsman of the year Guild of Wedding Photographers UK 1997. In addition Andrew Coe has been the official Portrait Photographer to the British Olympic Team in Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996.

The Market

The vast majority of the turnover generated by the social portrait market in the UK comes from mass market operators such as schools photographers and in-store operations who rely on telesales methodology together with standard backgrounds and poses.

There is though a niche market which the Barrett & Coe franchise targets. This section of the market wants high quality individual portraits rather than the norm - and are willing to pay for it. They are the sector who would have commissioned Rubens or Gainsborough to paint the family - now it will be your turn to photographically paint with light.

A Barrett& Coe franchise sets the standard for high quality designer photography operating at the top end of the market. Each photographer will be trained towards Associate BIPP level in photography offering a product to satisfy the needs of this key segment.

The Franchise Opportunity

Operating from home, you will have your own exclusive area to work from. The goal for Barrett & Coe and for every photographer within the franchise is to become the number one in your area. You will be the person who people turn to when they want their daughters wedding photographs taken or if there is a major family celebration.

We will teach each franchisee to produce original 'designer' photographs which will transform the general publics' view of photography. We do not require experience in photography, in fact we would prefer you not to have any.

The Franchise Package

The Franchise package consists of a combination of training and equipment together with full ongoing support and marketing which will help you to build a successful business.

All your photographic work will be processed by our award winning printers and our professional laboratory where all prints are finished, numbered and placed in mounts or albums which enables you to get on with the real job of taking portraits.

The Training

Our training programme is at the heart of our franchise and lasts between six and twelve weeks dependent upon the individual.

The training is undertaken and supervised by two of the UK's leading photographers who have between them over 50 years of portrait experience. Andrew Coe and Brian Barrett are able to 'short track' you by leading franchisees down the correct paths . They make sure that you bypass all the basic mistakes you would have made on your own.

The course takes you through all aspects of portrait and wedding photography. Training is undertaken within three different studios which we operate as well as utilising the latest computer photographic equipment which lets you see what you have taken straight away.

You will soon find that you are producing high quality saleable portraits which you yourself would treasure if you had been the customer.

The Costs

The cost of starting a Barrett & Coe franchise is £18,000 which breaks down as follows:

Franchise Fee & Training £10,000
Legal Fees £ 500
Equipment * £ 6,000
Stock & Stationery £1,500
Total initial costs £18,000

These figures exclude working capital.
* The figure for equipment is the cost price and we make no profit on this equipment. If a franchisee already has suitable equipment that can be used, the cost of it can be deducted from the above list.

The Franchisee Perspective

Patrick Dye LBIPP LMPA - Bath Franchisee
"I have always placed training in the 'dull but necessary' category, so it was therefore unexpected to find all the Barrett & Coe training to be hugely enjoyable and stimulating. To be taught by warm and enthusiastic professionals who are at the forefront of excellent photography gave me great confidence. The personal support and encouragement I received enabled me to achieve my professional qualifications."
Barry McCombe LBIPP LMPA - Salisbury Franchisee,
"There is nothing more rewarding than to sell your own work and be praised into the bargain. Remember to burn Andrew and Brian's training rules into your memory and don't relax for at least a year - but enjoy!"
